Cutting Boards

Cutting Boards

Cutting boards were among the first projects that I began after making the longboard. I started to see the possibilities of a business idea as cutting boards are a common household item for both everyday use and as special occasion platters. Cutting boards are also quite straightforward to construct and are fun to customize.

I begin by finding large pieces of lumber of different species of wood. I then mill it down to the dimension for each board. Often creating a design that incorporates a larger piece of one wood and a smaller strip of the second variety. This process involves flattening both sides of the wood such that they lay perfectly flat on a tabletop and are squared to each other. I then laminate the pieces together with Titebond 3 Glue so that it is food safe and waterproof. This process takes a minimum of 12 hours to ensure that the glue has cured fully.

The next step is to remove the clamps used to hold it in place for gluing and take it to my hand plane to flatten one side as often the piece of wood can become unaligned during the gluing process. I then put the board through the thickness planer to eliminate any warping in the board. Now I move on to sanding the board. I use an orbital sander at 80 grit and work my way up to 320 grit to ensure the smoothest finish and true beauty of the wood grain. The final step is when I burn my personalized logo into the back of the board before soaking it in a mineral oil bath.

I love making cutting boards! Each one is unique in its own way. Each board demonstrates its own distinct personality with the beauty of the wood grain.
